He was recog- nized by officers who had known him at West Point, and efforts were made to ob- tain for him a commission, when it was discovered that he had deserted. This is the report ; but as he was never afterward apprehended as a deserter, which would surely have been the case, he was so well known, and as the whole affair looks very much like an imitation of a similar freak of Coleridge, we have but little faith in its truth.
