This conviction must be followed by a reaction, in which the previous agonizing emo- tions were supplanted by joyful emotions of corresponding intensity, produced by the recog- nition of Jesus Christ as the atoning sacrifice, suffering, in the sinner's stead, the penalty of all his sins. In order to produce this alternation of emotion, the law, in the full extent of its demands and with all its terrors, was first pressed upon the conscience of the sinner ; and then the Gospel, with all its richness of mercy and sweetness of love, was presented to his heart.
