In fact the utmost precautions were taken against dangerous attempts of any kind. We also did our best to send the prisoners on board the Asahi and Kasuga. Some of these, lost to all sense of shame, were reehng about in an intoxicated condition, having evidently broken into the spirit room and stolen the liquor. The captain had been hurt by a splinter during the engagement of the 27th, when he was in the ( 66) conning tower, and had been confined to his bed ever since, his liead and breast dressed with the same blood-stained bandages.
