In 1909 in Philadelphia, 199 Negro firms employed 888 Negroes ; and in Pittsburg 67 firms employed 412 Negroes. A fair estimate is that between 9, 000 and 10, 000 persons, including proprietors, secure their living from Negro businesses. The barbering business gives em- ployment to the largest number.
