Probably the same may be said of all Europeans, if we go back far enough in ancestry. With many of the peoples coming to us from Southeastern Europe their Asiatic origin is not remote. That is one reason, perhaps, why this new contingent among us brings new problems. But the Jews are Asiatic not only in origin but also in the language which every Jewish boy learns to read and write, in the regulation of their daily food, in a large part of the customs which dominate their lives, both physical a...nd mental. They have persistently kept themselves a distinct and a distinguished Asiatic race in spite of the massive and cruel forces which would have submerged or at least merged any occidental breed of humanity. We have in the United States more than one million eight hundred thousand of these thoroughbred Asiatics. Nine hundred thousand have come in the last ten years. They are marked factors in the commercial life of every city and town. In the metropolis of America they are one-fifth of the popula tion.
