He early took a leading part in the medical... profession in the Connecticut Valley, his practice reach- ing into Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He was long the best known surgeon of that region, and his professional activities con- tinued until his election in 1900 as secretary of the Vermont Board of Health, a position which he held until 1912. After accepting this office he gradually relinquished his practice, and devoted himself unselfishly to his official work and to the many business and scientiQc organizations with which he was connected.
