...RANE 319 The lacunas of the Haversian systems are generally speaking abrachiate; and that part of the bone itself which is immediately contiguous to the periodontal membrane has undergone micro- scopical alteration and degeneration in which the structure of the concentric and intermediary lamellae are not only masked, but in some instances entirely lost and unrecognisable (see Fig. 285).
There is no calcification of any of the parts of the root membrane, no progressive ossification or osteoplastic signs, no attempts at ankylosis; everything points to retrogressive changes pure and simple.
