He looked through the wide open doors with sad curiosity; at all these desolated hearthstones, these deserted shops and silent work-rooms ; he ...saw the empty cradle of the child by the side of the grandmother's vacant chair, A SOLITARY JOURNEY. 143 and near it the spinning-wheel, now dumb and motion- less, as were all the other sweet symbols of domestic peace. His heart sank within him at the sight, and it seemed to him as if he were riding through one of those cities suddenly overtaken by the eruption of a volcano, from which after the lapse of centuries, the winding- sheet of ashes had been removed.
The horseman hurried through the village, and crossed the bridge, on one of the parapets of which, stood a stone cross, the only indication of that hope which brings consolation in despair.
