the giver and recipient alike, had not found satisfactory consummation in the modest structure on that lot. In making the donation of the large and valuable property on Fourth street, he coupled it with conditions, splendid in their concep- tion, in so far as the character of the building to be erected thereon was con- cerned, but financially utterly impossible of fulfillment on the part of the Society. So strong a hold had this project taken upon the mind of Mr. Lick that he had not only cause...d a front elevation of the building which he desired should be erected upon the lot to be drawn, but had outlined in his deed of gift so clear a description of its interior arrangement that it would have been easy to have carried his wishes into effect if the Society had been financially able to do so. As the matter stood, the gift was accepted and Mr. Lick at the next annual election was made president of the Society by a unanimous vote, for 1873-74. He was re-elected for the years 1874-75, 1875-76, and 1876-77.
