Fifty grms. phenol are dissolved in a solution of caustic soda containing 100 grms. caustic soda in 160 grms. water, and the whole introduced into a 1 litre round-bottomed flask provided with a reflux condenser, and then heated to 50—60°. 75 grms. chloroform Digitized by V^OOQIC 6o PRACTICAL ORGANIC CHEMISTRY.
are slowly added through the condenser, and after each addition the flask is well shaken. A gentle reaction sets in and the temperature r

When the whole of the chloroform has been added the contents of the flask are boiled for \ hour without removing the condenser, and a yellow semi-solid mass separates out of the solution. The unattacked chloroform is now distilled off on the water-bath, the liquid diluted with water and strongly acidified with dilute hydrochloric or sulphuric acid.
