In his search for appropriate musical expression, he did not always avoid harshness of melodic movement, and his airs may often seem to fall short of the grace of Lully^s, for example; but his ballet airs are always deliciously fresh, and his treatment of the resources of the orchestra is masterly.
While in early life he had to appear as an opponent of the old school, in his later years he became the champion of French music in the famous f Guerre... des Bouffons/ which raged for some years after the production of Pergolesi's Serva Padrona in 1752. War was declared in a letter by the Baron von Grimm, referring directly to Destouches's Omphale and attack- ing the whole school of French opera; pamphlets were dis- tributed in the opera-house from the { coin du roi ' and the c coin de la reine* respectively, for Mme. De Pompadour was on the side of the French music, so that the queen was naturally a supporter of the Italian comedians. The most remarkable utterance of the whole dispute was deferred for a year ; Rousseau's Lettre sur la Musique Franqaise, published in 1753, culminated in the often-quoted final sentence: c Je crois avoir fait voir qu'il n'y a ni mesure ni melodic dans la Musique Fran9aise, parce que la langue n'en est pas susceptible ; que le chant Fra^ais n'est qu'un aboyement coutinu, insupportable a toute oreille non prevenue ; que 1'harmonie en est brute, sans expression et sentant uniquement son remplissage d'ecolier; que les airs Fran9ais ne sont point des airs, que le recitatif Fra^ais n'est point du recitatjf.
