From an examination I made of the levees yesterday, I find that at the original crevasse, besides the space where the water goes through the levee about three hundred feet, it runs over the top of the levee immediately adjoining about an additional three hundred feet. The water also runs over the top of about 2-3 rod of the new levee constructed this last winter from the river into the space within the levees. Also over ...the top of the small levee built by Capt. Long in 1852, from the inside outwards also 80 through, the Mississippi levee, as I mentioned above, about half a mile above the confluence of the rivers. This last named cre- vasse is about one hundred feet wide, and I do not think it will increase in width. The water in the rivers continues to rise, and is to-day forty feet six inches above low water mark. Where it is over the levees, they are below grade. If the levees had been up to grade, and of sufficiently [solid construction, the disaster would not have occurred.
