He continued Governor of Scotland to the year 1555, when the Queen being of fufficicnt age, chofe her own guardians ; by whofe advice fhe named her mother to be regent during her abfence, to whom the Earl of Arran rea- dily refigned that great pofl: in full parliament, and laid • down an employment, which he had held to the general fatisfa(!^ion of the kingdom, and efteem of all foreign princes, who knew his deportment, for the fpace of twelve years.
