It was about noon when he came near, and he could see, as hereconnoitered, that a group of men were talking together in the openspace about which the houses were irregularly placed. They looked up all together: there was a yell that wakened echoes thathad slept for many a year; and in a twinkling the plaza (so to call it)was empty but for himself, and the braves were dodging about behind thehouses in mortal terror of the hideous monster, worse than the whitemen, for he was an unheard-of, polychromatic kind of being, not onlywhite, but red, blue, and yellow as well. It was no doubt the monster ofwhom the priest had warned them, who would appear one day, if they werenot careful of their Christian duties (and they could not say they hadbeen), and destroy them all and burn their village.
