This state of peace was, however, of short duration, for the settlement was suddenly attacked by the savages ; about twenty persons were killed, others wounded, and the rest fled to the mountains, making their way, almost destitute of provisions, through a wilderness of sixty miles, to the settlements at Easton, on the Delaware.
