Portulacca splendens, alba striata, two splendid half- hardy annuals of an exceeding showy character in an open sunny spot. Sow the seed in March in seed-pans filled with two parts fine leaf-mould, one part good peat, and one part silver sand ; that is, take, say two quarts fine sifted leaf-mould, one quart peat, and one quart sand, or a little less ; put good drainage in the bottom, a little coarse siftings on it, and 254 THE PLAIN PATH TO GOOD GARDENING. then the compound soil. Make it modera...tely firm and even, and sow the seed. Set it on a moderate heat, slightly shade it to prevent drying, and carefully sprinkle with water, should water be requisite before the seed is up. Prick them off into three-inch pots, three in a pot ; water, and shade for a few days. After a week remove the pots into a cold frame. Keep the frame close for a few days till the plants are hardened off; then admit air. In the month of June turn them out, ball entire, into the bed, which should consist of good garden soil, with a good proportion of leaf- mould and pit-sand worked into it.
