Those at the beginning, addressed 4o his friend Behrisch, were written at the age of eighteen, and most of the remainder were composed whue he was still quite young. Despite, however, the extravagance of some of them, sach as the Winter Jo*/mey over the Hartz Mountains^ and the Wandere...n^s Storm-Song^ nothing can be finer than Uie noble one entitled MdhomeC% Bong and otiben, such as the Spirit Bong over the Waters^ The OodUke and, above all, the magnificent sketch of PromethMs^ which forms part of an unfinished piece bearing the same name, and called by (jk)edie a * Dramatic Fragment* TO Mr FRIEND.
[These three Odes are addressed to a certain Behrisch, who was tator to Count Lindenau, and of whom Goethe gives an odd account at the end of the Seventh Book of his Ati- tobiography,^ mtST ODE.
