MR. JOHN ABBEY, a true poet of nature, was born in Bradford about 1845 or 1846. In infancy he went to reside at Huddersfield, where he received his education first at St. Paul's National School, then Senior's Academy, and lastly at Outcoat British. At the age of thirteen his mother died, and John was apprenticed, in 1860, to a jobbing printer at Heywood, in Lancashire, and it was as an indentured apprentice that he fir...st invoked the Muse in a memorial piece to a school superintendent, the poetical reminiscences of whom were printed and circulated through theWesleyan society. The vicissi- tudes of trade set Abbey prematurely free from his apprenticeship, and he then joined the office of a Glossop paper, where he found more congenial work in assisting with reports. The opportunity afforded by a journal where the standard of merit was not fixed inordinately high, encouraged Abbey to write poetry, and week after week he had a place in the "poet's corner.
