A widow appealed to the King for the settlement of a blood- feud which was threatening the hfe of her son, and so threatening to extinguish her house and race. The blood-feud, ...like lynch law, is a primitive type of justice which always springs up and flourishes where there is no strong centrahsed authority. From the existence of the asylum-towns, to which a man who had killed his neighbour might flee for refuge from the avenger of blood, it is evident that the practice was regular in the early clan-life of the nation. The right of the avenger to kill a murderer was a coarse, primitive method of preventing a condition of mere force. The one thing which could bring it to an end was to institute some central authority which would guarantee that justice was done in every such murder among the clans.
