One thing is certain; the sword that carves this Republic into an Empire will be the sword of her execution, and the tyrant who wields it will prove the author of her doom. So complete an apostasy from the faith of our Fathers will be overtaken at last with a destruction as memorable as that of a Carthage, a Babylon, or a Rome. For, if there be truth in History at all, it is that a nation, traversing its funda- mental faiths, dies by an act o^ felo-de-se.
