Sodium carbonate, representing weak alkalies, also has a markedly depressant effect. The total amount per minute is 0-7 below the control, the alkalinity per c. C. Afterwards it apparently does not sink quite to normal, but this is not really so, since a little biscuit debris (of course strongly alkaline) was contained in the saliva tested. He has further observed that in a dog which had an cesophageal fistula, and had had an addition of soda to its food for several weeks, the food which fell from the fistula was " hardly at all insalivated "; whereas in dogs fed without the soda the food was always copiously insalivated.
