Looking back over our analysis of music, we see that it is characterizedby the expression of emotion without the representation of the causesor objects of emotion. This fact, which has now become a well-recognizedpart of aesthetic theory, distinguishes music from all the other arts. Music supplies us with no definite images of nature, as painting andsculpture do, and with no ideas, as poetry does. It contains feelings, but n...o meanings. Music offers us no background for emotion, no objectsupon which it may be directed, no story, no _mise en scene_. Itsupplies us with the feeling tones of things and events, but not withthe things or events themselves. It moves wholly in a world of itsown, a world of pure feeling, with no embodiment save only sound. Itmay express terror, but not terror over this or that; joy, but whetherthe joy that comes from sight of the morning or of the beloved, itcannot tell. In one brief space of time, it may arouse despair, hope, triumph--but all over nothing.
