Mistakes may, and do, occur through carelessness ; but even where great care is taken there is certain to be some mistake made in the course of a long year's work. The proof is simple, and is to be found by asking any keeper of a considerable set of books whether his Trial Balance comes out rightly at the first attempt. How careful soever he may be, it will be found that in nine, and probably in ten, years out of ...ten he has had a difference which he has been obliged to search for. It is true that the difference, when found, may prove to be of such a nature as not to involve the firm in any pecuniary loss ; but that is a mere chance, and makes a mistake none the less a mistake.
