The balances set- tled ran as high as 5, 534, 000 in a single day in the year ending March 31, 1880, which would have absorbed one- fifth of the circulation of the Bank of England if bank- notes had then been employed. 1 The admission of the joint-stock banks to the clearing-house, which did not occur until 1854, is estimated to have released them from the necessity of keeping 500, 000 in currency on hand for meeting their checks.
