Rather should We cry aloud, and spare not, and lift up our voice like a trumpet, and show His people their trans- gression, and the house of Jacob their sin. But, here, let it be asked, what is it in slavery, which is sinful ? — Is it, in all cases, the act itself of hold- ins: a slave ? I think not. I think, that under, circumstances which have existed, and may exist, a man may be held as a slave by man, for his own greatest temporal, and spiritual good ; and that therefore, in condemning slav...ery, we should state * I wish it to be distinctly understood that I am, and ever have been, opposed to the system of Southern slavery. Involving, as I believe it does, gross violation of the Divine law, I would wish to exert whatever of influence I could to effect its destruction. And for this reason, it ap-> pears to me peculiarly desirable that all measures in opposition to it should be founded on just principles.
