MB. CLAY TO J. S. JOHNSTON.
Ashland, December 31, 1829.
My dear Sir, — ^Your favor of the 20th instant, under cover to Major Tilford, and franked by Judge Clarke, came safe to hand ; and I thank you for the views and information which it com- municates.

...disposed to do any thing right and politic ; but, from what I learn, I presume nothing will be done but to present an argumentation-report in favor of the Tariff and Internal Improvements, in which will be embodied some friendly expressions concerning me. The Gov- ernor gets along without difficulty. Much good spirit exists in regard to the State's doing something for its own improvement ; but the great obstacle is the want of means, and the want of union as to objects to be first undertaken.
I am busy in making preparation for my intended voyage to New Orleans.
