1057. ] SWISS NEWS. 2G9 MR. PELL TO SECRETARY THURLOE.
From Zurich, October 29th, old style.
Our people have been mustered, not only in the city, but also in the whole territory of this canton. Our deputies are all returned from Baden. They spent only two days there with the deputies of the other protestant cantons. There the deputies of Berne shewed them the copy of the letter which the Duke of Longueville had lately written to their neighbour, the governor of his town and province of Neufchas
...tel. Whereupon the deputies of Berne and Basil inferred, that we all ought to agree in a letter to be sent to the said duke, and henceforward not to treat at all with the French ambassador who resides at Soloturn.
As for the day of thanksgiving and prayer, which every year about this time is observed all over the protestant canton and allies, the deputies agreed that now it should be kept November 5th, old style. They did not choose that day with any relation to the solenuiity of that day in England (which none of them thought on) ; but because it was the first Thursday that could be conveniently signified to all their subjects after their return from Baden.
