In Chapter IV. It was pointed out that hallucina- tions, and the systems of ideas which hallucinations express, are to be regarded as dissociated portions of the patient's own consciousness. We are now in a position to understand why this dissociation t...akes place. The systems of ideas in question are for one reason or another incompatible with the personality as a whole, and their appearance in consciousness would in the ordinary course of events give rise to 126 THE PSYCHOLOGY OF INSANITY conflict and painful stress. To avoid this conflict repression has been called into play, and the re- pressed complexes can only obtain the indirect expression afforded by projection. The phenomena due to the projection are hence dislocated from the personality, and make their appearance as dis- sociated systems.
