That fine pastoral stream runs for fifty miles through what may be called a continued village ; so numerous are the little farms which border the line of road, and thick- en in the vicinity of the various parish churches. The fields are extremely narrow, separated by fences, and run up from the river bank far into the country. The inhabitants of these vallies are much in the same condition, both moral and political, in which they were in the days of French rule ; and to them Britain has indeed been a paternal government.
