Light, coming up from behind the workl, tinges the more lofty peaks witli pale rose and saffron, but the valleys are filled with heavy violet shadows. In the courtyard all is confusion. The breath of man and beast forms a thick mist in the freezing air ; and steaming, kicking animals are being loaded with packages which make it a cause for wonder that their backs do not break under the strain.
