"I shall give him a thrashing, " he declared, "as soon as I can walk. " Again he sat up. "You are a doctor, aren't you ?" "Yes. " "Listen. I had a wife once whom I loved. She was a good girl, very gentle and very kind. But a man stole her from me. " Leyland nodded his head slowly, with emphasis. "He stole her by pretending that he needed her more than I needed her. She told me She was going to leave me, to go to him. I consented to let her go. " He raised his head and faced the doctor.
