The other parties are zealous to be regarded as highly "progressive. " No candidate for a public office, but, at least in an indefinite de- gree, is ' ' progressive. ' ' The Republican party had its origin in the storm and strife of impending rebellion through the demand for a party that should stand in the name of the... people against the political theories of one section which would upbuild the aristocracy of the slave owner as the type of an American citizen. It main- tained that the national government had the power to control slavery in the territories and that the government should prevent its further extension. It stood for a protective tariff, for in- ternal improvements and a system of national bank currency. It was the party of the common people, of the everyday man. As such it led in fighting the war of the Rebellion, in reconstruct- ing the states and in reestablishing our currency on January 1st, 1879.
