Out of this period of eclipse there gradually emerged two schools of social revolutionary thought: one known as "State Socialism," imder the leadership of Marx and Engels; the other, "Anarchism," dominated by Proudhon and Michael Bakunin. These two schools were animated by quite dijfferent ideas, drew increasingly apart, and became increasingly hostile to one another.
