Productive criticism is a far harder task. The question it asks is : What did the author propose to himself ? is the purpose a just and reason- able one ? and how far has he succeeded in carrying it GEEMANY. 263 out? If these questions are answered with insight and friendliness, we have rendered a real service to the author."^ Goethe was not the first to act upon this principle.
