To the Bessarabian Liberation Committee, Odessa, Our country, Bessarabia, was constantly, from the third to the thirteenth century, the theatre of successive invasions by
...barbarian peoples, who have delivered it over to pillage and massacre. It was only from the thirteenth century onwards that the country began to enjoy comparative tranquility, and Genoese trading stations were established along the banks of the lower portions of the Dniester and Danube. Soon after- wards, however, Bessarabia fell under the power of the Turks, — 87 and for many centuries was subjected to their yoke. After a struggle that lasted for two centuries between Russia and Turkey, Bessarabia at last passed in 1812 into the possession of Russia, together with its fortresses : Khotin, Bender, Aker- niann and Ismail.
