The great creative god Brahma, who, by the light of his countenance, dispelled the primeval gloom, and by his divine infiuence evoked the earth from the primeval ocean, is represented in Hindu theology as having emanated from a golden lotus which had been quickened into life when the spirit of Om moved over the face of the waters.
