The river Kyll is another beautiful stream of the Rhine provinces which is well worth the angler's atten- 6 82 TROUT-FISHING tion, particularly its upper waters. In size it re- sembles the Nette, but for some reason or another, which lies most probably in the soil or strata it flows through, i...ts fish are neither so game nor so good as those taken in either the Nette or Ahr. It is, however, a lovely stream, flowing through a wild and picturesque country. The largest fish I captured weighed If Ib. ; the average may be put down at ^ Ib.
This stream is a late one, the fish being in order no earlier than the 1st May. The flies on this river are much the same as I before mentioned, with the ex- ception that the red fly and alder are thicker on it than on most continental streams. The last day I fished it I used the blue dun and furnace in the morning, with the soldier palmer and sandfly in the afternoon.
