Least of all was this claim allowed to the early occupants of the episcopal chair at Rome. So late as the Nestorian schism in the fifth century, Neander affirms that the right of a su- preme judicatory authority, according to the then constitution of the church, in nowise belonged to them.t Pope Leo, near this time, having set up some pretensions of this sort, was overruled by the general council of Chalcedon.t It re- quired several ages more of deepening religious darkness and mental servitude to rivet this yoke upon the souls of men.
