Would that to this some elementary in- struction might be added in the principles of po- litical economy ! If this had always been a part of our common-school education, 1 think we should not now have hundreds of thousands of people imagining that the government can create labor or manufacture wealth, any more than we should have a tariff which fattens eight millions of people upon the flesh and blood of thirty-four millions, and defies the principles which have been estab- lished science in the region of political economy for a whole century.
