Kossuth, escorted by the conmiittee of reception and followed by his suite, entered the hall, and advanced up the aisle in front of the speaker, the members of the house generally rising to receive him. Mr. Carttec, of Ohio, chairman of the committee, said : — " Mr. Speaker : We have the honor to present Governor Louis Kossuth to the house of representatives of the United States." The speaker said : " As the organ of this body, I have the honor to extend to Louis Kossuth a cordial welcome to... the house of representatives of the United States." To which Kossuth replied: — " Sir : It is a remarkable fact in the history of mankind, that while, through all the past, honors were bestowed upon glory, and glory was attached only to success, the legislative authorities of this great republic bestow the highest honors upon a persecuted exile, not conspicuous by glory nor favored by success, but engaged in a just cause. There is a triumph of republican principles in this fact. Sir, in my own and my country's name, I thank the house of representatives of the United States for the honor of this cordial welcome." M.
