was used for the detention of British soldiers captured during the Revolu- tionary War. Lancaster was elected as their place of confinement because the prevailing sentiment of a large majority of the citizens was decided- ly hostile to the English cause. These Barracks were erected on what was formerly Middle street, now Howard avenue, near East King, and stood un- til 1886, when the opening of Shippen street caused its demolition.
