While the loop was, say three miles in length, it is apparent that it would be a question of only a very brief time before that runaway would travel around the circle, rush down upon us, and smash into the rear of our train.
It being early morning, every passenger was in his or her berth, and there would not be time to rouse them and get them off the train before the runaway would crash into us.
