Some say he vanished away suddenly, and the truth is that 92 Grettir the Strong no one knows more of him. It is thought he was some troll, sent there by Glam to be Grettir's undoing, for if Grettir had come into the church the evil spirits could not reach him; and if he had borne the iron he would have broken the current of his ill- fortune.
But the word was brought to the king that Grettir was in a brawl, and Olaf came out of the church and found Grettir standing looking about him for the lad,... and all amazed, as if he had seen Glam himself.
"Now, " said the king, "by this violence thou hast put from thyself all the virtue gained by thy fasting, and hast broken in upon the solemn ordeal. After this it will not be possible to clear thee by means of the hot iron. ' : Then Grettir was much cast down, Grettir Becomes an Outlaw 93 and spoke to the king of the kinship between them, and how he had made the long journey from Iceland in the hope of taking service with the king. He asked to be taken into the king's body-guard.
