Then the bearded man in the black robe commenced to speak, showing them the cro...ss that he wore upon his breast, and he told them about Christ and the Virgin Mary and how men, understanding him not, had taken Christ and crucified him long ago, and the Indians smoked on in silence, listening to his words.

Then they rose and went home to their wigwams, where they told the young men and women all about the strangers who had been sent by the Great Manito; and in Hiawatha's lodge the strangers, weary from their journey and the sum- mer heat, stretched themselves upon the robes of ermine and went fast asleep.
