The Christian academy had two important results: It gave the students a thorough training in several practical subjects, subjects which would increase their earn- ing power and efficiency; and it served to fill the gap which heretofore had existed between the elementary schools and the universities.
The first schools of St. De la Salle had been estab- lished to supply the educational needs of poor and neglected boys and to help the children of tradesmen in the cities of France.
