D. , and, in fact, after the disastrous events of 70, re- sulting in the dispersion of the Jews, and the re- settlement of the Roman Empire, the Book of the Revelation was suppressed probably by its author, because it was seen to foreshadow a number of events which were therein predicted as immediately to follow (Rev. Xxii.... 10 ; i. 1), and which did not follow, and could never follow. And so the Apocalypse was suppressed for many years, and only revived with the revival of perse- cution, after which, as I shall by-and-bye relate, its position was very ambiguous, until Joachim de Flore in the eleventh century gave it a new lease of life, by inventing for it the still popular view, John the Apostle is the Writer. 145 which supposes it to be a description of events still in the future, a fantastic opinion, which will no doubt soon receive, if it has not already received, its quietus.
