In the background we see some tall-roofed houses, topped with turrets; and beyond these we can just make out the spire of a church rising to the sky.
This is, indeed, a busy sc...ene, and it is a picture which we nuiy carry away with us. It well shows the energy and the activity which, during the later Middle Ages, 194 THE STOBY OF THE MIDDLE AGES made the towns the starting-place for so many im- portant movements.
