" S. Williams, " Assistant Adjutant General." Lincoln, however, extended no congratulations, for we find in " The Diary of Gideon Wells " the following entry : " June 20, 1863.
**. . . The President said if Hooker had been killed by the shot that knocked over the pillar that stunned him, we should have been successful.
" Sumner said he knew Hooker to be a blasphemous wretch. At Chancellorsville he exclaimed, ' The enemy are in my power, and God Almighty cannot deprive me of them.' " That was all cabinet meeting talk.
