In both cases all t...he previous steps toward the development of the Gothic sys- tem have been brought together, while the proportions have become lofty and noble, the parts admirably related, and the whole infused with a certain poetical quality [88] THE GREAT AWAKENING hitherto unknown. I am persuaded that Jumieges originally had alternating trans- verse nave arches, like Cerisy, though I be- lieve no one has suggested this before. Its western towers are of extraordinary beauty of composition and outline, but the end of the nave between is crude and undeveloped and is, I imagine, something left over from a much earlier church.
