The heavy volume of traffic in the streets of our unplanned cities in addition act like great mills for making dust, grinding up the dirt and refuse in the streets, and then leaving it to be strewn about and to be blown all over the city, defacing the expensive fa- gades of the buildings and marring and soiling the homes of the people by showering their furnishings and decora tions with this dust and dirt. These destructive agents, which soon make any city look old, worn, and unattractive 246 THE SUPERCITY and cause it to be depressing and unhealthful, are removed from the new city.
